Alan Smeaton is a Professor of Computing at Dublin City University. He is currently the Director and the Co-Founder of INSIGHT Centre for Data Analytics, Dublin City University. His research work focuses on the development of theories and technologies to support all aspects of information discovery and human memory, allowing people to find the right information at the right time and in the right form. In terms of research outputs and distinctions Professor Smeaton has published more than 600 refereed publications, has over 13,000 citations to his work on Google SCHOLAR, and an h-index of 57. Professor Smeaton is also an elected member of the Royal Irish Academy, the highest academic distinction that can be awarded in Ireland, winner of the Academy’s Gold Medal in Engineering Sciences which is awarded only once every three years and is a Fellow of the IEEE.
Within the area of data analytics, Professor Smeaton’s work focuses on the use of analytics tools such asmachine learning and inference in a wide range of applications including analysis of visual media for broadcast, security, archives and autonomous driving, applications in lifelogging, personal sensing and wellness, monitoring of energy usage, tracking behaviour and flagging behaviour change. Many regard this kind of work as forms of artificial intelligence and in his presentation he will show how all these, and indeed most of AI applications are all just data-driven.
